I am a BIG BELIEVER of using Essential Oils in my home or for sickness. Peppermint is great for getting rid of headaches. Basil is great for our earaches. Respire is wonderful to help congestion. Lemon is fantastic for cleaning, etc, etc. I am not a doctor, but I do know that these are just a few oils that have helped my family. You can go online and do your own research about oils, then come back to http://www.sparknaturals.com/ and order some to try out. The Essential Kit is a great one to start with and is UNDER $20! Don't forget the discount code: dotsanddoodles for another 10% off!

Am trying to put my Stacked Squares quilt together. Still have more blocks to finish but I was getting too excited to wait any longer so today I pulled out my design wall and started putting the blocks up on it. I am using almost all of the AdornIt fabric that I had left over from making the granddaughter's outfits from their photo shoot back in August. I LOVE that fabric so much! Have you checked out the AdornIt website? From fabric to scrapbooking to clothing.....just wish I could find their fabric in my LQS! I bought what I have while on the Utah Shop Hop this past summer.

I will probably be changing up some of the blocks but for now will keep them up until I get the other blocks finished. The pattern is free from Moda Bake Shop. You can find it here.
I don't think I ever showed my chevron quilt all finished and quilted! This isn't the greatest of pics since I cropped some people out of the picture but you can see the wonderful quilting my quilter did on such a simple quilt. I love it and have to say it is one of my favorites!

Finally got my Winter quilt back from the quilter. The quilt pattern is by Geralyn Powers back in 2005! I had bought the kit to make it and just never got around to it. Yea for me finally digging it out of the kit box and putting it together.

My youngest son has commented several times over the years about when I was going to make him a quilt. I always assumed I was going to wait until he got engaged and then make him a quilt for his new bed. I even have the pattern ready to go. This past year I tried to use up some of the fabric stash I have and for some reason I found a bunch of flannel all tied together like it had been cut for a quilt but I didn't have a pattern to go along with it. I really didn't want the flannel to go to waste so I decided to also use my large Twister Ruler that I haven't used before to make a lap quilt. As I was sewing, it dawned on me that I could easily make this quilt for Joel, my son. I was able to get it to the quilter in time for a Christmas finish. From the look on Joel's face, I think he will like the quilt.
Found this beautiful flannel in my LQS and wanted to make myself a lap quilt for our snowy winters here in Wyoming. I wanted a pattern that was easy and quick since I was just using it to wrap myself up in. I settled on Suzanne McNeill's 10 Minute Block. You can watch her video here. There are other videos of the same block on YouTube.

Our quilt guilt made a several quilts this past year with this block. Basically, you take 10" squares and sew them together. Even the center black fabric is from a 10" square. I didn't notice how much the squares could look like a bow tie until I had everything on the design wall.

My sweet quilter quilted the quilt beautifully. I told her to just do some edge to edge but she wasn't sure she could do it with the centers. I love what she did!

This one will have the bears in the center of the quilt with all the little 6" bear paw blocks surrounding it. Going to be beautiful when it is done.

I didn't get a picture of this finished but it is so much cuter in person than the picture on the pattern package! You use a very tiny twister ruler to make the pumpkin. It was interesting that 3 of us had twister rulers to use on projects we brought!

Near Name's Hill, LaBarge, Wyoming. This road was closed for a while so the mud could be moved off the highway. That hill in the picture has pioneer names on it. One is supposedly Jim Bridger's. Interesting, since he was suppose to have been illiterate. :)

As mentioned in my last post, I was able to attend a quilt retreat last week. We spent 5 days sewing up a storm inside the house while the real storms moved around outside! At one point we weren't sure we would be able to make it home because a flash flood/mud slide closed our main highway. We have been getting so much rain lately!
The retreat was wonderful! http://www.tetonpatchworks.com/ Each room was decorated in a different theme. The sewing room is set up for 8 quilters. Since there were only 7 of us, we paid $170 dollars for 5 days, 4 nights. I thought that was quite reasonable! We did have to bring our own food but we pooled everything together and cost was about $20 per quilter.
Here are some of the quilts hanging up around the home:
This is Snow Business by Geralyn Powers on my design wall today.

I went to a quilt retreat last week and this was one of the projects I worked on. I took projects/kits that I had stashed away in my closet. You know....those ones that you want to make but somehow they get pushed behind all the newer projects that are calling your name. I'm so glad I took this kit with me. It is still as cute as it was when I first saw it.....back in 2005. Ummmm......yea.

For the past 2 years I have been using essential oils in my home and for my family. Today I want to share a newer oil company that I have recently become affiliated with. First off I have to tell you that I am a believer in pure essential oils. Spark Naturals sells pharmagrade oils.

This is from their website:
Spark Naturals products are Certified Pure PharmaGrade – CPPG™ – a physical standard ensuring our products are of the appropriate identity, strength, quality, purity, and consistency standards used internationally for quality and purity. Our raw materials are tested and authenticated to be of pharmaceutical grade purity. Spark Naturals likes to deal with facts; our goal is to educate the public about health issues, offer serious alternatives and provide luxury products backed by facts – not advertising or business opportunity ploys or gimmicks. We offer CPPG™ products – luxury products intelligently priced. CPPG™ is our quality commitment – we will offer only those products for which we can ensure our commitment to true quality – our commitment to luxury, intelligently priced.

I heard about Spark Naturals soon after they launched and bought a few of their oils to try to see how they compared with the ones I have been using. I have to admit that they are wonderful!

Right now they are having a back to school sale on 2 very popular blends of oils plus you receive 2 roller bottles for only $33.00! It comes in a wonderful tin so you will always know where your oil is at.
Jeddy's Blend is made up of :Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Ylang, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense, Vetiver, Patchouli & Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Anyone still out there?!!!!
It has been a long time in "blogland" time of me posting a new post here!

I just haven't been sewing much this summer so the blog has been on the back burner for some time now.

Plus summer is just busy here in Wyoming! Everyone who lives here knows how short the summers are. You try to get outside every chance you have before the cold comes again. This summer has been full of gardening (not going too good this year), to Big Birthday trips, to family reunions.

I did get a bit of sewing in the last part of July. These darling babies are my grandkids. The littlest one is missing in these pics since he doesn't walk yet. Let me tell you....trying to get 6 kids, 6 and under, to cooperate for pictures was exhausting. First picture the photographer took, the baby did a face plant on the concrete and cried for the next hour and a half. The next child, 15 months, just kept getting up and walking off every time you sat her down. Sigh. Like I said....exhausting.

I had been wanting to make some clothes for the girls for awhile now so figured this would be the time to do it. After quilting for so many years, it was hard to come back to sewing clothing! Just reading a pattern was confusing to me at times. I found a couple of cute patterns on etsy for the tops and used a pattern I already had for the capris/bloomers. The fabric is from an Adornit line called Nested Owls that I picked up at the Utah Shop Hop in June. I love it!
I guess it's about time I show our 2013 BOM from our LQS. Again, this year we have the option to make the pieced blocks in 2 different colorways. This is the pink version.

Here is the autumn colorway. The setting is a Circle of Nine with appliqued leaves. Will make a beautiful Fall quilt.

The applique "quilt" is not a true quilt this year. We are making 3 small wall hangings. This is the first one. We have already made the flowers, watermelon and now are making the ladybugs in March. I am still debating on whether I can save all my blocks and make it into a Season quilt at the end of the year. I will have to see what the next quarter's blocks look like before I decide.

Along with how to make the blocks each month, we are given more ideas on how to add to our wall hanging. Here are some placemats, table runner and dish cloth.

Our BOM's are a bargain compared to what I hear about other ones around the country. We only have to pay for our first month's block ($10) and then if we bring it back finished the following month, the next pattern is FREE! It makes being home on each second Saturday of each month a must! If we do miss a month, we only have to pay $7 for the pattern/fabric. We all try really hard to make our quilts be only $10!

I have a new blog post on http://rippinstitchers.blogspot.com/ if you are interested in seeing our quilt guild's happenings this month. We didn't have many show and tells but it has been fun getting to know some new women in the valley.

About a week ago and I was contacted by the Online Media Coordinator from Fons and Porter. Am I the only one that didn't know F & P had FREE booklets to share with the world?!!! I was asked if I would review their Log Cabin booklet for them and share what I thought on my blog.

Ok.......sure!!!

I printed the 24 pages out so I could really look at each page. Can I just say right now that I have always loved Fons and Porter?! I have even traveled to their store in Winterset, Iowa. Such a CUTE town! But this was such a nice treat.....a booklet that is really worth the color ink it takes to print it out!
The booklet tells a bit of history on Log Cabin quilts in the first couple of pages but them quickly turns into a pattern book. All for FREE!

I count 6 FREE patterns in this little booklet!
This one has really caught my eye and is on my "someday I need to make this" calendar!

All directions are included. The last few pages talk about binding with piping and Liz' lumpless binding.
So many pictures and great patterns!
This is a wonderful booklet for any quilter. My daughter has been wanting to make her own Log Cabin quilt for several years now. I am going to have to share this link with her! You also can click on the link and sign up to get the free booklet!
I accidentally sent this post to my own blog but instead of deleting it I will leave it up. If you want to "read the words" that I added, you can go to our Guild's blog. http://rippinstitchers.blogspot.com/ As you can see I shared my Chevron quilt with the ladies.
My daughter-in-law finished her 2012 BOM! She brought it over to show me after she picked it up from the quilter. There was a bit of trouble with the borders but I am so excited for her to push on and finish! It is big enough to go on her bed so she had a lot of fabric to push through her machine. I am so proud of her! The setting of the blocks was something we found online so she kind of winged how to put it all together. No directions at all. I was a big help. I told her to just look at the picture and then decide how big she wanted her blocks and to go for it---after I showed her how the original was pieced together. Her 1st quilt was a BOM too (Noah's Ark). It is such a great way for beginner quilters to learn to sew quilt blocks plus they get a quilt at the end of the year!
While I was helping my son and his family move across the country this past week, my hubby picked up my quilts up from my quilter. She did a wonderful job once again!

You can see my one block that I made when I thought I was going to use this layer cake as a sampler quilt. I decided to use up every last bit of the cake by placing the extra on the back.

What do you do with your pre-cuts? I have several jelly rolls and a couple of layer cakes in my stash that I bought years ago when they first came on the market. I have used a few of the jelly rolls to make sampler quilts but the layer cakes have sat untouched. I did make one block a couple of years ago with a couple of 10" squares but then the rest of the squares have been stashed away. Until now that is.

I don't even remember what this layer cake's name is but I have loved the fabric since I bought it. A few months ago I saw Missouri Quilt Company's youtube video on how to make a Chevron quilt. Looked simple enough so yesterday I pulled out the remaining squares and got to work. The construction is very simple. Take one layer cake square and then a contrasting color that is also 10". Place them RST and sew 1/4" around all 4 sides. To make this process go quicker sew in an assembly line fashion. Sew all squares on one side, cut them apart and then sew the next side until you have sewn all 4 sides. Cut the squares apart on each diagonal and you have 4 blocks. Press and then put them together how you want them to look. It wasn't until I was ready to put my blocks on my design wall that I realized I didn't have has many green blocks as I did pink.

Here was my first attempt at putting the blocks together. Blah.

Next I tried to keep the colors together in the blocks. Again....blah.

Finally I took everything off the design wall and started over by mixing everything up. As you can see, I only had enough greens for one row but I like it.

Now to put on the border and get it to the quilter! A layer cake gone from my stash! Yes!

After living in this valley for many years, several women got together in November to organize a quilt guild. We have a wonderful fabric store in our midst so it was about time we got the many quilters together around here and formed a club.

I volunteered to make a blog so you are welcome to have a look at it!

I am so excited for our new adventure in our lil' Valley! Any suggestions are much appreciated on how/what to do at our meetings!

My gifts to my friends and neighbors this past Christmas were these 10 minute table runners. The link takes you to the directions but you can make your runners any size or width you like. The inside fabric should be about 4" smaller than the outside fabric. I just cut to the width of my fabric but if you want it longer, you can add to that. They do literally take about 10 minutes. Hardest and longest part is sewing on the button. I take that back.....if you are like me, the hardest part was picking out what fabric I wanted to use.

I wrapped a battery operated candle inside the rolled up runner and tied a bow and whoola, I was finished! I ended up making about 14 of these quick gifts!
