New doings at the quilt shop

Had a great time at last month's Saturday Sampler! We were shown a cute, fun, free pillow pattern made from fat quarters. I "think" it is a Riley Blake pattern. One fq is used on the back side of the pillow or you could use minkee like the black pillow in the picture. The other 2 fq's are on the front....sewn together as you would a regular pillow back where you slip the pillow form inside. Decorate the front as much as you want. These were very cute!

Love the Owl Pot Holders! You can find the pattern here

I hope to get several of these made before Christmas. Seems like owls are very popular lately! I saw some owl dinner dishes at TJ Maxx recently. So darling! Will have to get a picture of the newest quilt my daughter is making (and what she said when she showed me her blocks)....yes it has to do with owls!

I think I caught up!

It is kind of addicting to make all of these bow-tie blocks! This is certainly going to be a wild quilt but I am enjoying the whole process of cutting and sewing them together. Still have more to make then I will figure out how to put it all together. I am actually thinking about making another one in a more subdued color scheme. Just need time to cut and organize them so that when I have a few minutes I could whip a few up. I love how the bow-ties are like a log cabin block and you have many choices to choose from as to how you want to make your quilt. Or maybe I don't like that.....it is going to be hard to decide!

Baby has still not made her appearance yet. Mommy is dialated to a 5 as of today's appointment. Doctor said that if she had been at 6, he would have sent her to the hospital. Shucks. I am hoping baby is here before our oldest son, dil and grandchild visit in a couple of days!

Better late than never

I am late to the party....took me reading Pleasant Home's blog more than once to finally realize that I could join this too--like everyone else! Years ago, I found a bow-tie quilt top at a garage sale and bought it. Since that time I have loved that pattern but never made a quilt with it. Well, I am now going to remedy that and join in on the fun of making a block a day till the end of summer. Not sure I can make just one block every day...will probably make several and then stop for awhile but the challenge is going to give me the jump start I need to make a bow-tie quilt! My goal is to use only scraps. If you are on facebook you can join here too! Didn't I say this summer was already busy for me?????

Barn Chicks

The baby of the family had surgery last week. Instead of coming home, we decided to have her recuperate at the cabin. I took my sewing machine so I could finish these guys. I have had this kit for a few years now after seeing the quilt in a store that has since gone out of business. It is a Buggy Barn pattern from the book, Certifiably Crazy. Now that I'm home, I can square up each block, add the border and then it's done. The colors match perfectly with the walls in my home so I am excited to finish it even if it did take some time to start it!

Saturday Sew Day at the LQS

With the LQS designers being published in their first magazine, they had a fun sew day after our regular BOM meeting. A few of us stayed and played for awhile. I worked on another Buggy Barn quilt that I bought as a kit a few years ago.

This is another version of the quilt that is shown in the newest issue of Quilter's World. The original is orange, pinks and greens. One of the designers told me that she likes this new version better! But I reminded her that she has been looking at the other quilt for a very long time now...this one is just new colors. Both are darling! As soon as I buy the ruler, I will be making it.

Here are the next 2 BOM's for our Saturday Sampler. Middle child won a gift certificate for her last year's quilt on Saturday!

Next block on our appliqued quilt:
Was a nice day to sew. Met several women from Utah that came to spend the day. They get together every Friday to sew with each other. I couldn't believe they would drive so far....but then again....we quilters are unique!

Sew Fun Get-Away

This past weekend, The Honey, my daughters and daughter's friend headed to the cabin to sew. Not The Honey....he just came to relax. He was suppose to ski but was just getting over a cold so he stayed indoors.

Sewing machines got set up quickly on Friday and the girls dived right in on their projects! I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was so I didn't get much done. I ended up not having enough heat-n-bond for my applique pieces.

Look at that face on my baby!!! She isn't quite into sewing yet....plus she thought she should be sleeping all day since she was on "vacation". And her hair.....well.....hard to tell she is a stylist, isn't it?! hahahaha :) (she is going to "love" this pic!)

I bought this magazine because our LQS designers are in it with their quilt pattern. Page 33.

I love their quilt, but I was really drawn to this quilt that is featured right after theirs. I loved it so much that I decided to make it the day before we headed to the cabin. (One of the reasons I wasn't prepared----last minute decisions with color choices were more important than heat-n-bond I guess)

As far as I got....I could have finished the braid but got tired of getting up and down to press. I finished it when I got home with the iron that sits next to my machine.

I also brought this to make. Again.....not enough heat-n-bond so I couldn't do the applique. It would have been a quick, easy quilt to make if I hadn't forgotten the main ingredient for this project!

Middle child sewed up a storm. She is almost finished with her "Not Your Grandmother's Log Cabin" quilt! Look! She matches her quilt!

She also worked on her finishing blocks for this year's BOM from our LQS. These will go with her "watermelon" BOM.

Finished up some more jelly roll blocks and her March BOM.

Here's is her friend. I am amazed at how well these girls sew! This one has never done applique before and had no problem picking up how to do it!

Had snow while at the cabin.....again......am hoping that next time we are there we will see signs of Spring!

New Year...New BOM!

Last Saturday I attended our LQS's kick-off for 2011's Block of the Month. This year there will be 3 quilts we can make. We can make the pieced quilt in either the soft colors that are shown on the left or the bright "watermelon" color quilt. The appliqued quilt is shown in the center. The first block is the house and will take 2 months to complete. The tree will be made another month. Middle child and I decided that we will make the watermelon and the appliqued quilt this year. As long as we bring back one of the block's finished, we will get the next month's pattern/fabric free. You can't beat that! If you make two or three, you pay $6/month for each BOM. Still a bargain! I'm excited to get going on them!

Using the Lil' Twister

I had alot of fun using this ruler for my Convoy border. Thought I would share in steps how you make a border like mine. I see lots of quilts sewn together with the Twister ruler but not a border.

First you cut 5" squares and sew them together. If you have a charm pack that matches your quilt, it would be even quicker to whip this up! Sew a 3" border around your long strip of 5" squares.

Put your Lil' Twister ruler on the first seams and line it up with the lines on your ruler. Cut all 4 sides.

Move down to the next seam and again place your ruler on those seams and cut around. Every cut you make is lined up with seams so it is easy to know where your next cuts will be.

Continue cutting at each seam with your ruler.

You get a little bit of leftovers from the centers. I have seen these made into 9 patch pot holders. Very cute!

When you make each cut, place your pieces together in their pinwheel places.

I cut several pinwheels and then sew them together so I can keep them in order more easily.

I'm not a great piecer but look at how the centers of each pinwheel look so nice! It's very easy to "match" centers together. You really don't have to do anything but sew a straight line!

So you go from 5" squares with 3" borders around them....

....to a very cute border! Looks complicated, but isn't! Just what I love~Easy and quick! I'm now thinking I might have to buy the bigger twister ruler that works with 10" square fabric!

Would love to hear if you try these rulers!

Are you playing along?

The Layer Cake Sampler Quilt Along started yesterday. Is anyone playing? I am! I have had a couple of layer cakes for ages and decided to use them up.

I love the Charisma fabric (on the left) but it might be a tad too busy for this quilt. I am disappointed that the pinwheel doesn't stand out more. Most of the fabric is busy and dark with not much contrast. We will see what happens as the weeks go by. The one on the right is unknown fabric. I love the colors in it...bright, deep pinks and greens but again, it might not be a perfect choice for a sampler quilt. At least I can feel good that I am using some of my stash, right?!

Started cutting out another grandbaby's snuggle quilt today. I am not getting much done though...a few months ago I downloaded the pilot show of "In Plain Sight" and watched it on a flight to Denver. I enjoyed it enough to check out the rest of the first season on Netflix. BUT I am finding it is hard to watch tv/computer and also try to sew. I hear of other quilters being able to do both at the same time. I guess I'm not one of them. Darn because I am kind of getting hooked on the show! It probably isn't wise to just watch tv all day is it? :)

Reorganization

I have a closet in the gym where I store some of my sewing/craft supplies. It has been very unorganized for a very long time. Finally I did something about it.

I pulled out all my quilt kits and laid them on the treadmill. Yes. I have alot. The prices were good so I bought. (I know...I know...that's a poor excuse...sort of embarrassing seeing all of these laid out and knowing I probably won't make all of them!)

While on my trip last week to Boise, I found these baskets at TJ Maxx (LOVE THAT STORE!). It was like a lightbulb went off and I got the idea to reorganize the closet and put my kits in these cute things.

Here's what the "neat" side of the closet looks like now. I, and the closet, feel so much better!
